The fortification was built in the Middle Ages and was mentioned for the first time in a written document in 1064. From the 12th to 15th century Roč developed into an urban settlement. Until 20th century Roč was one of the most important Croatian literacy, printing and publishing centres-based on the oldest Croatian alphabet, called „glagoljica“. In Roč the first Croatian printed book Milas from 1483 was prepared for printing according Duke Novaks Missla from 1368, which has kept in Nugla at that time. Hence, in Roč Tourist office there is a replica of Gutenbergs printing press. ISTRIADUCTION All Year | No working Time | Pay per Entrance The National Park Brijuni comprise 14 island and islets - Veliki Brijun, Mali Brijun, St. Mark, Gaz, Okrugljak, Supin, Supinić, Galija, Grunj, Vanga (Krasnica), Pusti (Madona), Vrsar, St. Jerome and Kozada. It is one of the loveliest archipelagos in Mediteran, together with favorable climate and rich animal life make the island a must for every visitor in Istria. The person responsible for tourist valorization was Paul Kupelwieser, who in 1893 bought the island an intention of turning them into an exclusive tourist center. Kupelwieser invited Robert Koch, the famous bacteriologist who put a lot of efforts to exterminate malaria from islands. In 1912 the Zoo was founded.
